About Us

Welcome to the Sunny 16 Camera Club

Bowling Green, Kentucky

Sunny 16 was founded in the year 2000 by Frank Jarboe. What started out as a handful of photographers sitting around the studio at Shutterbug quickly became a full-fledged club.

Sunny 16 holds monthly meetings, special learning sessions and club photo contests throughout the year. It’s a friendly place for beginner and experienced photographers to improve our photographic skills, share knowledge, Hear constructive critique, and enjoy photographic events.

What’s in the name?

Our name was derived from the Sunny 16 Rule. Photographers began using the rule in the mid-1930’s. The rule was created before the light meter.

The Rule:

General exposure for a sunny day is 1/(film speed) for the shutter speed and an aperture of f/16. If you’re photographing outside on a sunny day using 100 speed film the exposure would be 1/125 of a second. This would capture the scene as you generally perceive it.

Club Activities

Sunny 16 has had over 16 years activities in the community and continues to gain exposure and expand. The current club roster includes over eighty members. One of our activities, every year, is participating in the Kentucky State Fair. Our members have faired well in recent years. Members are active in photographing various community events during the year including Special Olympics and Glasgow Highland Games. Members participate in day and weekend field trips during the year. We practice our skills, test equipment and learn from each other. Please check out our “Calendar” page for our club trips and area activities.

Monthly Meetings

Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the fellowship hall of the Presbyterian Church at 10th and State Street in downtown Bowling Green. Enter through the lower 10th Street entrance and proceed to the second door on the right.

We have monthly meeting programs on various photography subjects ranging from DVD presentations to guest speakers and how-to’s, along with a themed challenge for club members. Meetings will normally feature an educational component, the announcement of monthly club challenge results, and time to socialize. See the Challenge Groups to see a list of current and upcoming challenge themes.

We love visitors! Please drop in and see what we’re all about!
