How to Improve those shots!

Noise reduction software

New postby krbrid » Wed Dec 31, 2008 1:10 pm

Some of you may already use some kind of noise reduction software to clean up you images. I found one with a free download offer at http://www.focusforensic.shorturl.com/

The software is called Picture Cooler 2 and the free download is a trial version...the full version costs $20.00. From what I can tell it does a pretty good job.

I've attached a couple of before and after images...

You know, if you hadn't told me I wouldn't have known that there was a problem with the unfiltered shot. May be more apparent when blown up more. What ISO did you use on this shot?

I use the Noise Ninja plugin for Photoshop and it does pretty well without having to fiddle with a lot of settings. Here's a sample shot at ISO 1600 (100% crop). The first is the original, second is Noise Ninja and third is using Nik Dfine. I adjusted the settings to eliminate most of the color noise but left some of the luminance noise. What's left looks more like film grain, which doesn't bother me, plus it doesn't smear out all of the detail if you take it easy on the luminance.

Think that photo was shot at 400 ISO...but it was very low light and the original image was kind of dark...so when I lightened it up a bit the grainyness really showed up on the larger resolution. After running it thru that software it really cleaned it up but it did lose a bit of detail. My camera has a lot of noise at 400 and above in low light situations which is when you would normally shoot at the higher ISO's. It's probably not as bad as I make it out to be, but I still notice it more so than others do.
