Our next club meeting will be held Tuesday, February 9th from 7-9 pm at the Presbyterian Church on the corner of State and 10th streets in downtown Bowling Green. Meetings are generally held on the second Tuesday of every month.
January Meeting Recap
Present were: Howard Margolis, Tony Wycihowski, Janet Young, Brent Whitlow, Melanie Henderson, Sheila Reeves, Alan Reeves, Leon Vincent, Keith Bridgman, Hack McCauley, Ronnie Ryne, Mark Titschinger, Larry Burnham, Raquel Baez, Cecil Knudsen, Terry Knauft, Lynn Reeves, Dan Brown, Jarod Weaver, Mike Bullis, Leslee Bandy, Gary Elwood, Alison Houk and Steve Willoughby. We welcomed visitors, Leslee and Gary, and had Dan, Jarod, Cecil, Mike, and Steve join the club this month. Welcome everyone!
New members and friends, please visit us on the web. The galleries are full of beautiful photos by this talented group. The link is: http://www.sunnysixteen.org/
We started the meeting by taking a few minutes for everyone to walk around and view the 60 prints that are in the Moments of Discovery show right there in our meeting room at the Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. There are some very talented people in this club. Very good job, everyone.
There will be another Moments of Discovery show May 1st in the Porter Café gallery of the Public Library. If you would like to participate, please let Janet know asap as space will be limited.
Our member Keith Bridgman has a show at the Porter Café in February. Keith will also hold a photography workshop there on March 4th from 6-8pm. The workshop is entitled “How to See Photographically.” Registration is taking place at the Library.
Former member, Lauren Millikin, has a show going on now at the Capitol. Please plan to see all of these shows and support our members, past and present.
The US Bank Celebration of the Arts open art exhibition is coming up. Click here for entry details and forms: http://www.wku.edu/Library/museum/artshow/index.html
We watched a DVD segment from Art Wolfe--Travels to the Edge. This one was from Glacier Bay in Alaska and was visually stunning. Several members have been to Alaska and can highly recommend the trip for photo opportunities. Between the landscapes and the animals it is a photographer's paradise.
A DVD from Keith Bridgman was shown. Beautiful shots, as usual, from Keith. This one was called Sandhills: Cranes in the Snow. Taken at Barren River, they were some of the most gorgeous pictures of these beautiful birds.
There are two Sandhill Crane watches to be held at Barren River State Park. Click here for details: http://fw.ky.gov/newsrelease.asp?nid=658
The contest for next month is LINES. This one is NOT timed. That means it could have been taken any time, not just between now and the next meeting, which is what a timed contest usually means. There are five categories in which you may enter. Only one, if you choose to enter as an amateur.
1. Assignment: Lines – Unmanipulated
2. Assignment: Lines – Manipulated
3. Open – Unmanipulated
4. Open – Manipulated
5. HDR (High Dynamic Range) – one photo using HDR software
Amateur – one photo/open category
There are several HDR programs on the market. However, Photomatix is worth checking out and you can download a free trial here: http://www.hdrsoft.com/download.html
The difference between Manipulated and Unmanipulated: Manipulated means you have changed the original photo, through software such as Photoshop. Unmanipulated means it is turned in with nothing done to it that could not be done in a darkroom. For example, you *can* use crop, sharpen, saturation, levels, contrast, color enhance, black and white, dodge and burn. You *can not* clone out something, add something, liquify, etc. thus changing the original photo to something extra.
This club photo contest is open to paid club members. Photos are due the Friday before the next club meeting by 4pm. Photos for this particular contest will be due on February 5th. You may email your entries to Janet Young at: mtnbkr74@hotmail.com
Please resize your entries to a 5x7 range at 72 dpi. Winners of the contest will receive an 11x14 print of their winning photo from Shutterbug Photo Mall. It will be put on foam core and displayed there for the month following the winning night. You will be responsible for getting the same picture you won with to Shutterbug, either via the online drop box or by taking in a CD. It must be the same photo as a high resolution jpg. After that month is up, you can retrieve your print from them. Our thanks to Jim Roshan and Shutterbug Photo Mall for their continued support.
Sheila Reeves asked about enlarging photos and was told that if they were good clear quality at 300 dpi, they should be able to go up to 24X30 or more. To increase size, in Photoshop, go to Image Size and click on Percent instead of Pixels and increase them by 120% each time to get larger by increments instead of just jumping to the larger size. It keeps the integrity of the photo much better this way.
The meeting broke up into focus groups for the Canon people and the Nikon people. There was some discussion of Photoshop in one group.
One of the perks of being a member is getting the sensor on on your camera cleaned. The club owns a couple of kits. Janet spent a good deal of time working on cleaning up some dirty sensors for people.
